2012 Wreaths Across America @ the Florida National Cemetery
General Event Information
Wreaths Across America was started by Morrill Worchester owner of the Worchester Wreath Company, in 1992 the company found itself with a surplus of wreaths, remembering a trip to Arlington National Cemetery he had taken as a child, he realized he had an opportunity to honor our country’s Veterans. He along with the help of Maine Senator Olympia Snowe, arrangements were made for the wreaths to be placed in one of the older sections at Arlington.
In 2006 this endeavor expanded to 150 locations with each location receiving 7 wreaths to honor those veterans that have been laid to rest. In 2007 he decided to open up the program so individuals could sponsor a wreath.
We have organized the wreath laying and ceremony at the Florida National Cemetery since 2006, that year we had 7 wreaths and about 60 people; in 2011 we placed over 6,000 wreaths and had over 7,000 people in attendance for our ceremony and wreath laying! The cemetery director has said that this is the best ceremony he has ever been associated with. This is a free event and will be held on December 15th, we’re expecting up to 9,000 wreaths and 8,000 people. IHOP will be providing free breakfast at the cemetery, active duty military members from CENTCOM will be part of the ceremony, the Coast Guard is scheduled for a fly over, and we are awaiting on confirmation from the Florida National Guard, that one of their Artillery units will provide the 21 Gun Salute. Wreath laying will begin approx. 11:00am with the ceremony beginning promptly at 11:45am.
Again, this event is free to the public, please come out on Saturday December 15th to Remember our fallen veterans, Honor those that have Served, and Teach our children of the sacrifices that our veterans have made.
