Letter from the General Manager

On September 13, 1963, WUSF Public Media began broadcasting from the University of South Florida in Tampa. Now, we’re celebrating our golden anniversary. It’s been an amazing 50 years!

Fifty Years of Growth
We began with a single radio station, WUSF 89.7, and a single television channel, WUSF TV. Since then, we’ve evolved to embrace four TV channels, two radio stations, a vibrant online platform and a thriving video production department. Today, we’re the only comprehensive media service in the Tampa Bay region, offering a host of programming and communications services for television, radio, the internet and more.

Fifty Years of Technological Transformation
During the past five decades we’ve seen waves of technological change. This included the advent of cable television, a shift to high-definition digital broadcasting, emerging content for the web, and smart media devices. We’ve not only kept up with those changes—we pioneered them. We’ve gone far beyond the world of broadcasting. We’re WUSF Public Media now, and we live up to our name.

Fifty Years of Inspired Content
WUSF Public Media offers a comprehensive variety of programs, including news, entertainment and educational shows for children and adults. We also provide a wide range of original, cross-platform content, including University Beat, Florida Wildlife Corridor Expedition, Health News Florida, and StateImpact Florida. With our two performance studios in Sarasota and Tampa, our Classical WSMR hosts have brought you live performances and interviews with regionally and nationally celebrated classical musicians.

Fifty Years of Community Service
Each year, we reach more than a million viewers and listeners, and have benefitted greatly from a solid base of passionate volunteers. Our reporters and on-air hosts are committed to bringing you in-depth news on health, education, military and veterans' affairs, environmental challenges and the Florida State legislature. Our reporters have earned Emmy and Murrow awards and numerous other prestigious honors.

Fifty Years at the University of South Florida

USF has provided a great home for WUSF Public Media beginning with studios in the original USF Library. The radio station moved into its own building in 1989 and the TV building was completed in 2001. In 2010, the studio on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus was completed and this year staff will occupy an office at USF St. Petersburg.

Our first 50 years have been truly golden. As we approach this momentous anniversary, we can’t help reflect on what it’s all for and who makes it possible.

You, Our Valued Members
Your support has empowered and informed our journey every step of the way. Together, we ensure that WUSF Public Media's programming and initiatives have consistently been of the highest quality. Through your support, we’ve been able to continue our commitment to providing creative, entertaining, responsive, educational and trustworthy programming. For that, we are most grateful.

We thank each and every one of you for your contribution. Please join us as we honor our past and embrace the future!
