V. EEO Outreach activities during the reporting period

A. Job Advertising

When filling job vacancies, WUSF Public Broadcasting targets minorities and minority groups in the broadcasting business and practices pro-active recruiting by making direct contact and encouraging applications for advertised positions.

When applicable to the nature of the job vacancy, ads are submitted to national minority job resource centers such as the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, National Association of Asian Journalists, and National Association of Black Journalists. All full-time and part-time vacancies are posted on the WUSF Public Broadcasting Employment page of the website and on the University of South Florida's employment page of their site. All Director level positions are advertised nationally including using the following three minority publications: Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education http://www.hispanicOutlook.com, Black Issues in Higher Education http://www.BlackIssues.com, and Women in Higher Education http://www.wihe.com

B. Fellowship Program

WUSF provides a special opportunity to strengthen the professional preparation of women and minorities for leadership positions through the University's Excellence Through Leadership Fellowship program.

C. Job Tours, Part-time Jobs, and Internships

Job Tours- Through a program called "The University Experience," WUSF-FM and TV provide tours in the Fall to college age students who are interested in pursuing a career in Public Broadcasting. College students at The University of South Florida who took the Introduction to Mass Communications course were given scheduled tours. A Job tour was also given to groups of seniors from the Life Long Learning Project of Eckerd College. In addition seniors from groups such as Red Hat Chapters and AARP were given tours. Throughout the year, tours were provided upon request to local k-12 students, scout troops, and other students interested in visiting the station For interested school aged children that are "home schooled," scheduled tours were also conducted. Special tours were also conducted for Summer Enrichment groups for "at risk students" from public and private institutions - one group in particular was from the Enrollment Development Office at Hillsborough Community College. Local public and parochial schools were offered tours of both stations. The students left with materials from the station which informed them of our general broadcast mission, a WUSF bookmarker, and a TV viewer guide with a PBS coloring book included. Job tours were also provided to volunteers, donors, members, as well as current students and potential student interns.

Part-time jobs and Internships - Public Broadcasting provided opportunities over the past year for Federal Work study students on a part time basis to work in several areas throughout the station. These positions provide an excellent opportunity for college students to earn income while acquiring necessary skills for continued employment in the industry. These students work in a variety of departments and areas that include general office, web design, newsroom and music library. This past year, WUSF partnered again with the USF School of Mass Communications to offer five internships for Junior or Senior Mass Communications Majors who have an interest in learning more about the business. These internships in the four media platforms of TV, Radio, Radio Reading Service, and web are structured to help these individuals to develop the skills necessary for gainful broadcast employment. Minorities and students with disabilities were encouraged to apply. Since August of 2006, six college students have participated in these 15 week internships and are eligible to receive college credit for the successful completion of the internship.In Spring of 2007, the Business office of WUSF offered a new experience for four college students that are Business and/or Accounting majors. This experience was a rewarding new opportunity for this department.

D. Staff Members Encourage Interest in Broadcast Careers

Over the past year, several staff members participated in community events and activities to promote the continued interest in careers on Broadcasting. These activities included staff:

E. College Credit Course

Another effort to encourage interest in broadcasting careers was continued this year through the offering of a college credit course at our facilities on USF campus. This course is offered in partnership with the USF College Of Mass Communications, who provides a professor of record. The course, Advanced TV Production and Direction, was presented in the Fall 2006 Semester and is led by a team instructor approach. The course is currently offered now for the Fall 2007 semester.
