Fifteen graduate students in the USF School of Architecture and Community Design had nine weeks this past summer to come up with plans for an East Tampa-based “transit village” where people could live, shop, work and catch the proposed lite rail system. University Beat has their final projects.

USF Lakeland may be the smallest of the University’s campuses, but it might just be the leader when it comes to getting its educators the training they need on the latest high-tech tools they can use in the classroom. University Beat examines the “Faculty Technology Integration Institute,” a summer program that not only helps them get connected, but stay dialed in to the most up-to-date technologies and practices.

| September 10, 2007 : SRI International |
| |
In a potentially huge economic boon to the Bay area, USF has paired with SRI International, a leading scientific research institution, to create SRI Saint Petersburg. While SRI gets the expertise in “harsh environment” sensors developed at USF’s Center for Ocean Technology, the deal could eventually bring almost two hundred million dollars and at least two hundred high-tech jobs to St. Pete.
SRI Saint Petersburg’s Manager of Administration, Carol Steele, explains how the deal between USF and SRI came about.

University Beat gets you ready for some football with a visit to USF Bulls’ practice, where the team isn’t just preparing for the new season—they’re also taking part in research that could one day save the lives of players from all levels, pee-wee to professional. The Director of the USF Division of Sports Medicine, Doctor Eric Coris, explains how a tiny pill that’s actually a high-tech thermometer helps his staff know which players are showing signs of heat illnesses long before symptoms appear.

| August 26, 2007 : The Ikea Residence Hall |
| |
| Retailers helped to decorate this USF college residence. |
USF Saint Petersburg is preparing its residence hall for the new school year by inviting IKEA and Wal-Mart in to give one of its rooms a makeover. The residence hall, which opened last year and is the first such hall in USF St. Pete’s forty-year history, houses almost 350 students in four-person suite-style units. In addition to social and civic activities, students will now be able to attend classes in a new classroom right in the building. Room rates range between about 500 and 600 dollars a month, which covers cable TV, local telephone service, utilities and rent.

| July 8, 2007 : Obesity Action Summit Follow-Up |
| |
USF recently hosted a one day "Obesity Action Summit," bringing together over 250 stakeholders — legislators, researchers, employers and health trainers — to put together a plan to take on obesity. Attendees heard presentations from former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and other speakers concerned with a problem that affects as much as two-thirds of the American population. The summit's goal was to come up with ways to help people already affected as well as deter future generations from becoming obese.
