A Night of Spirituals & Other Songs of Inspiration
General Event Information
For the first concert of its 6th year, The Plant City Community Choir (PCCC) will perform music celebrating the divine in and resourcefulness of the human spirit. The foundation of American music began in the call-and-response Spirituals of slaves working in fields. Over time, these songs transformed into Gospels and Jazz; from there, the road to Rhythm and Blues and Rock and Roll is easy to trace. Today, all of America’s popular music today can trace its roots back to the Spiritual. Because PCCC’s audience has been expanding, this musical journey will be presented in Valrico on Friday April 4th; as well as in Plant City on Saturday April 5th.
“A Night of Spirituals & Other Songs of Inspiration” offers an uplifting blend of anthems from traditional sources reworked for choral voices such as “God Has Smiled on Me”, “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, “Soon and Very Soon”, and “Were You There?”. Director Kenneth Watts has included reimaginings of classic hymns like “Amazing Grace”, “His Eye Is on the Sparrow”, and “Children Go Where I Send Thee” as well as modern anthems such as “Afrika Gloria”.
In addition to invited instrumentalists who will perform with the choir, Paul Hetrick—a distinguished community performer—will sing several solos.
On Friday April 4, 2014, Holy Innocents Episcopal Church is again hosting PCCC in its sanctuary at 604 North Valrico Road, Valrico. On Saturday April 5th, the choir will return to the acoustical charm and brightness of St. Clement Catholic Church, 1104 N. Alexander Street, Plant City.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. each evening, and the doors will be open to the public at 7:00 p.m.
Advance tickets for the performances are $10.00 if purchased from a PCCC member or on-line (www.pccommunitychoir.com) or $12.00 at the door. Admission for Children 12 and under and Seniors (62+) is $8.00 in advance or $10.00 at the door. Tickets are available at the Plant City Chamber of Commerce office and the office of St. Clement Catholic Church during their regular business hours.
