Then & Now 11/9: Guitar Music
Two works for guitar had their premieres on today’s date. In 1940, Rodrigo’s popular "Concierto de Aranjuez" for guitar and orchestra, had its first performance in Barcelona, and in 1994, Michael Torke’s “Nylon” for guitar and chamber orchestra, was premiered by the East of England Orchestra with Nicola Hall as the soloist.
There’s plenty of guitar music in Sarasota as Guitar Sarasota presents many events throughout the year. Coming up on Monday, November 21, at 7:30pm – Trio Voilà – will present a concert. Trio Voilà is a rare, mixed ensemble comprised of the flute, guitar, and viola. This combination of instruments has a long tradition with original music from the 19th and 20th centuries, along with new, ground-breaking and exciting music by contemporary composers. By nature, the tone creation of a wind, plucked, and bowed instrument is very different, producing sound colors which cannot be created by traditional wind or string ensembles. Trio Voilà is the only one of its kind in Florida and one of a handful in the US. More information is online at www.guitarsarasota.org
