Then & Now 6/7: Happy Birhtday Maestro!
On this date in 1897, the Hungarian born American conductor George Szell, was born in Budapest. He led the Cleveland Orchestra from 1946 until the time of his death in 1970.
And a very well-known conductor in these parts celebrates his 90th birthday this year! Long time conductor and co-founder of the Sarasota Music Festival Paul Wolfe will be honored with a special concert at this year’s festival with a special homage written by the current Festival’s artistic director Robert Levin. The Sarasota Music Festival starts this Thursday and runs through the end of the month with concerts, recitals, and lectures. This Saturday night, Classical WSMR will broadcast the first Saturday Symphony concert live from the Sarasota Opera House with music by Brahms, Canteloube, and the Beethoven Violin Concerto with soloist Noah Bendix-Balgley who is the concertmaster of the Berlin Philharmonic and a former Sarasota Music Festival student.
