saxophonist Coleman Hawkins
The High & Mighty Hawk: Coleman Hawkins
The saxophone was a novelty instrument when Coleman Hawkins began playing it. He became the first great tenor saxophonist, and stayed consistently modern throughout a lengthy career, from the 1920’s into the 1960’s. This week’s Saturday Night Jazz – 105 years from the day of his birth -- will begin with some of Coleman Hawkins’ music, including his famous 1939 recording of “Body And Soul,” along with a few songs that have been done in his honor.
