More from WUSF's Bobbie O'Brien Saying that Florida needs teachers is nothing new - continued growth and retirements are helping to create the vacancies.
Last year, about 20,000 new teachers statewide were hired according to Cathy Hebda, director of recruitment for the state department of education.
But this fall to meet class size amendment requirements, Hebda says even more teachers will be needed 32,000 more.
HEBDA: 'The first thing that is going to happen if we don't meet that goal is we're not going to stop trying our recruitment efforts do not end on the first day of school.'
One of those recruitment efforts is a statewide teaching job fair scheduled this Wednesday and Thursday at Tampa's Convention Center. More than 1300 teachers were recruited during last year's event in Orlando.
