Report Calls for Prison Reforms
![]() |
The nonpartisan Commission on Safety and Abuse in America's Prisons found widespread violence against prisoners and staff, poor medical and mental health care and lack of funding for rehabilitation programs.
Alex Busansky is the commission's Executive Director.
BUSANSKY: No judge, as part of their sentence, says You shall be raped, you shall be extorted, you shall be abused by other inmates and corrections officers. You shall be exposed to and you will contract HIV, tuberculosis and hepatitis.' And yet, in some facilities in this country, that becomes part of the sentence we impose on individuals.
Among other reforms, the commission recommends increased funding for drug treatment and rehabilitation programs.
A spokesman for the Florida Department of Corrections said he had not yet reviewed the report and declined to comment.
