Report: Florida's Graduation Rate Among Nation's Lowest

TAMPA -

There's a gap between the graduation rate the state reports and one determined by a new report from Education Week. According to the report, Florida's graduation rate is 47th in the nation.

Christopher Swanson is director of the Projects in Education Research Center, which produced the report along with Education Week.

SWANSON: We calclulate a rate of about 58 percent or so for Florida, and the state reports a rate of 66 percent. So that's a smaller gap than we see from most states. That's what we would expect from a state that's doing a good job of tracking its students.

Swanson says Florida's official graduation rate includes students with GED's, or graduation equivilency diplomas. He says programs can be used to identify potential dropouts as early as the sixth grade.
