Growth Restrictions OK'd Around MacDill AFB

TAMPA -

The deal is intended to prevent the base from closing because of development encroaching on the flight paths leading to and from the base. That was the case of Oceana Naval Air Station in Virginia Beach. A base realignment panel recommended moving jets from the heavily-populated area becase urban development restricted training flights.

Rich Tanga is the project's liaison with the Department of Defense. He had nothing but praise for the land use committee.

TANGA: This is going to become a model study that I'm going to use as a case study to share with other communities we're going to do these projects with throughout the country.

High-rise development would be restricted in what is called the high-accident zone at the foot of MacDill's runways. That's roughly a swath from the base's entrance at Dale Mabry Highway west to Tampa Bay.
