Hillsborough Schools Open with an A
Hillsborough Schools open this year as the ninth largest district in the nation.
And despite an annual growth of more than 5,000 students and the mandate to reduce class size, the district is starting short only 200 teachers out of close to 15,000 positions.
Overall, Superintendent MaryEllen Elia's assessment is that the district is in good shape.
ELIA: We're an A school district and that's a wonderful thing. We're one of the large school districts in this state. And being an A school district in an accountability system that I think everyone would say is very controlled, we did very well. We're going to build on it.
Student achievement is her top priority. But, Elia also is initiating a student wellness plan and an internet safety training program.
ELIA: We think that our children are safe when they're sitting in our homes. We have to realize that the internet is opening our homes up to people on the outside and we don't know who we're inviting in.
Elia's caution for the first day of school - anticipate that some buses may be running late.
