TAMPA -

A poll released today by the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute shows State Senator Rod Smith has cut significantly into the lead of Congressman Jim Davis.

Davis of Tampa was favored by 43 percent of respondents while 32 percent favored Smith of Alachua. The survey of Democratic voters was conducted over six days ending Monday.

It shows Davis losing support and Smith making huge gains when compared to a similar poll last month that had Davis with 47 percent to Smith's 19 percent.

The poll's margin of error is plus or minus 5.6 percent.

In the Republican race - Florida Attorney General Charlie Crist still has a wide lead over Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher.

Early voting ends Saturday. Primary Election Day is next Tuesday, September 5th.
