Students Recall President, Sept. 11
Students at Sarasota's Booker Elementary were sitting alongside the president in the midst of the 9-11 terrorist attacks.
President Bush knew a plane had hit the north tower of the World Trade Center when he arrived at the school, but the terror plot was still unfolding when he sat down to listen to the children read aloud.
Tyler Radkey, now 13 and in seventh grade, remembers when an aide whispered in the presidents ear.
RADKEY: And, all of the sudden, we saw his security guard walk up to him and his face just started to turn red. And, I thought personally that he just had to go to the bathroom. And, he just stood up and left.
That's when the president was told -- that a second plane had just hit the World Trade Center. Another student Mike Andrews recalls how the mood of that day changed.
ANDREWS: Everybody was excited, everybody was getting to meet the president is big. And then when you get there, it was like a feeling of just sadness because you just went from here all the way down because he made that announcement and everybody was all sad and we were wondering what was going on.
Five years after the 9-11 attacks several Booker students shared their memories last month with The Associated Press.
