Jennings Challenges Congressional Race Recount

SARASOTA -

Democrat Christine Jennings lost to Republican Vern Buchanan by less than four hundred votes. But more than 18,000 voters who cast ballots in other races failed to vote in the congressional contest. That rate was nearly 16 times higher than in the surrounding counties.

Jennings filed suit in state court in Tallahassee, just after the Florida Election Canvassing Commission certified the results. Sarasota County Elections Supervisor Kathy Dent says there was nothing wrong with the voting machines. But Jennings says the touch-screen machines malfunctioned.

JENNINGS: The voters of Sarasota and the entire country deserve answers about what went wrong with this voting system. This is not about Democrats, this is not about Republicans. It's about fixing a voting system that appears to be broken.

A survey of election workers by The Sarasota Herald-Tribune found one out of three received complaints that voters had difficulty getting their votes to register. One in five said voters complained they did not notice the congressional race.
