Fire Scorches Historic Ybor City Building
The smell of burnt wood and scorched brick is noticeable for blocks around the remains of the building at 22nd Street and 7th Avenue. A furniture and decorating business was located in the structure.
No one was hurt in the five-alarm blaze.
Todd Spear is a fire marshal with Tampa Fire Rescue. He says whether the building is saved or demolished is a business decision for the owner, and a safety concern for officials.
SPEAR: A lot of it is strictly a safety decision. This is a building that's literally a sidewalk width away from a major transportation artery, that an awful lot of goods come out of the Port of Tampa along this road.
The building was constructed in 1916, but was not on an historical register.
