The Doorways Scholarship program offers students a deal: stay in school, maintain good grades and don't get in trouble. In return, the Pinellas Education Foundation will award a $10,000 scholarship to use at any Florida college or university.
Pinellas School Superintendent Clayton Wilcox says the program offers hope for students who couldn't otherwise afford college.
WILCOX: What it says to families is the 'American Dream' is still possible. You can go to college, you can be all that you that you've dreamed. I think we help a lot of parents with this and we take a financial burden off their shoulders. It's just a good thing all the way around.
The program is funded by corporate and individual donors. Those donations are matched dollar-for-dollar by the state. More than 2,500 students in Pinellas are now enrolled in the Doorways program.
