Florida May Get Earlier Shot at Presidential Primary

Florida currently schedules its presidential primary in March.

That's two months after the selection season starts in Iowa and New Hampshire and too late to influence the parties' presidential nominees - according to some Florida lawmakers.

So, they're proposing to move Florida's presidential primary to February 5th or a week after New Hampshire's vote.

State Rep. Pat Patterson says Florida's diverse population could help candidates decide whether to stay in the race.

PATTERSON: When you look up how we're made up, we represent all the people of the United States. We make up South Florida, Central Florida, North Florida.

Some opponents say Florida's too big and would overshadow the chances of lesser known candidates to win.
