Donations and a Plan Offered to Homeless

ST. PETERSBURG -

Mayor (Rick) Baker presented a plan to address both short range and long term needs of the homeless.

The city and county will work with Catholic Charities of St. Petersburg to provide housing vouchers and other immediate assistance to help the people camped out on the city's streets.

As for longer term help, Baker says retired Boeing CEO Harry Stonecipher came forward with an offer.

BAKER: And I said 'I have a plan, will you help' and he said 'Yes' and he said what he will do is he will commit to a match up to $500,000.

This public-private coalition intends to raise the matching half million dollars through private donations and support from local and county governments. The group will use that money to build three transitional centers throughout the county.
