Manatee Kidnap Suspect Gives Up

Clay Moore
BRADENTON -

The suspect in the kidnapping of Clay Moore decided it was better to surrender to U.S. authorities, rather than face extradition from his native Mexico. Vicente Ignacio Beltran-Moreno is now in custody at a Texas border crossing and will soon be transported to Bradenton.

Manatee Sheriff's Major Connie Shingledecker says officials made it clear to Beltran-Moreno that prison conditions in the U.S. are a lot better than they are in his home country.

SHINGLEDECKER: You can run away to Mexico and we will still find you, or you can come back to the United States and have the opportunity to have your family come and visit you, but we will have you in custody, and we made that quite clear.

Moore was snatched two weeks ago from his school bus stop in Parrish by a man wielding a gun. After being left tied up in the woods, the teen used a safety pin he had put in his mouth to pick apart the duct tape that held his wrists and then freed himself.
