Growth on Sarasota Ballot
SARASOTA (2007-03-12) Parts of southeastern Sarasota County have seen unprecedented growth over the past decade, as the cities of Northport and Venice have annexed huge tracts of land.
Northport has doubled in size and has battled the county over the added burden on roads and schools.
Sarasota County Commissioner Shannon Staub says citizens are concerned about the rapid growth in the southern part of the county.
STAUB: A lot of people are very frustrated over the intensity and the pace of growth and this allows their voice to be heard at the ballot box.
But some city governments say they want to retain control over development in their cities. And business groups, such as the Gulf Coast Builder's Exchange, worry that new restrictions will put the brakes on economic and job growth.
