Ex-Felons Have Some Rights Restored
Critics of the previous system argued the process was archaic, noting the rule was written during the Jim Crow era. And then there was the 2000 election, where voters who had never been to jail were errantly placed on the ex-felon list.
The new rules allow ex-felons to hold licenses for many Florida occupations including plumbers, roofers and cosmeticians among others. Once their rights are restored ex-felons can also hold public office and serve on a jury but they'll still be prohibited from carrying a gun. The new policy is being hailed as a political victory for Governor Crist. He was able to pass the measure despite strong objections from many in his own party, including Attorney General Bill McCollum.
