Fiscal Wake-up In Tampa
Concern over the nation's growing deficit is bringing together both liberal and conservative groups.
The Heritage Foundation is sitting down with The Brookings Institute and joined by the Concord Coalition and the country's top comptroller. Their goal is to deliver a 'Fiscal Wake-Up' to citizens, business leaders and politicians.
They brought their sobering message to the University of South Florida Tampa Campus this week.
U.S. Comptroller General David Walker is head of the Government Accountability Office. He says the government's future liabilities for programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid totals $50 trillion. That is equal to $ 440,000 for every American household.
Walker estimates it will take more than a generation to fix.
