Coal Power Plants Questioned
![]() |
A group that was planning to build a new coal plant near Tallahassee says it is suspending efforts to get a permit in the face of 'growing concerns about greenhouse gas emissions.'
The decision was hailed by Gov. Crist as good for Florida. But local utilities such as Tampa electric plan to rely on coal in the future. Tampa Electric spokesman Rick Morera says says the utility is proposing what is called 'integrated gasification combined cycle,' which captures carbon and prevents it from being released into the atmosphere.
The new generator is being planned for TECO's Polk Power Station, which already uses the combined cycle technology. They hope to have the new generator running by 2013.
