Residents Say No to Sex Offender House
About a dozen people chanted while picketing the south Tampa home of the owner of a Seminole Heights apartment building. The owner bought the apartments in March and began renting to sexual offenders and predators about a month ago. But a church across the street had applied earlier to build a day care center. And some of the parishoners don't want convicted sex offenders near where children will play.
State law bans sexual offenders and predators whose victims were 16 or younger from living within 1,000 feet of a school, day care center, park or playground. Tampa has talked about adopting a 2,500-foot rule, but there are no restrictions on living near churches.
