Smart Growth Initiative Makes Sarasota Ballot

SARASOTA -

The measure would force the County Commission to approve changes to the county's growth plan by a supermajority - meaning at least four commissioners would have to give it their OK. Backers say it would fight suburban sprawl by keeping development in urban areas.

The change to the county charter has come under attack by developers. they say it would raise the price of land outside the urban service area, which is generally west of Interstate 75. They say it would give them less options for building and drive up the cost of new homes.
