Wetlands Division: Saved or Abolished?

Florida Wetlands
TAMPA -

Last month, a majority of Hillsborough County Commissioners voted to eliminate the county's wetlands protections division. The board members - who double as the Environmental Protection Commission - said they had heard from developers who had been denied permission to destroy small wetlands.

So commission director Rick Garrity came back with a plan that would 'streamline' permitting. It would keep the wetlands division, but make it easier for property owners to do what they want with their land

So board members have three choices: One: Keep the current level of protection. Two: Do away with wetland permitting altogether. Or Three: Go with Garrity's plan to streamline the permitting process.

They'll hold a public hearing and vote on the changes at their next meeting August 16th.
