Nuclear Power Recommended

US Department of Energy: Office of Nuclear Energy
TAMPA -

Florida needs nuclear power to meet future energy needs while reducing greenhouse gas emissions - that's a key recommendation of the Florida Energy Commission. The legislatively appointed panel passed several suggestions during its meeting earlier this week in Orlando.

In all, the Florida Energy Commission discussed 10 recommendations for Florida's future energy supply and delivery.

Chairman Tommy Boroughs says one suggestion about natural gas exploration in the outer continental shelf was rejected.

He says the most important of five recommendations passed is to encourage nuclear generation despite concerns over security, plant siting and the storage of spent fuel.

'We think it's far outweighed by the fact that nuclear doesn't emit greenhouse gases,' says Boroughs. 'And, it will help us get independent of foreign oil which some of us think is just critical that we do.'

The commission must deliver a report to lawmakers on energy supply, conservation and innovation by December 31st.
