Mass Transit and CSX Deal

TAMPA -

The deal between state transportation officials and CSX Transportation is on its way to Gov. Charlie Crist's desk. It allows a commuter rail system to use existing CSX lines in the Orlando area, while shifting freight service to a regional hub to be built in Polk County.

It could also impede any plans to use the company's rail lines from Tampa to Orlando for future mass transit.

Local transportation officials say it's just too early to tell what the deal's effect would be on Tampa Bay-area transit plans.

Also, Lakeland officials have expressed concern about freight trains from the new Winter Haven transportation hub backing up on the main line throught their newly-renovated downtown.
