Ribbon Cut on Desalination Plant
The permit was first issued for construction of the pioneering desalination plant in 1997. It was up and running several years later, but problems with fouled membrane filters closed the plant and forced major additions to be added. Special filters that force the salts from water with a thousand pounds of pressure have been constructed at the plant, which sits in the shadow of TECO's Big Bend generator.
The plant is now producing 25 million gallons per day. It provides about 10 percent of the drinking water supply for Hillsborough, Pinellas and Pasco counties.
