HB 411 Seeks Internet Info

TAMPA -

Internet dating is becoming a popular way for couples to meet. Yet, the internet also is a venue where vulnerable people can fall prey to con artists. Tampa State Rep. Kevin Amber is proposing a bill that would help protect Floridians from internet predators.

Florida House Bill 411 would require internet dating sites that charge a fee to disclose to Florida residents whether or not they conduct criminal background checks on members.

Ambler says he tailored the bill to address internet dating sites instead of social gathering forums such as Facebook. He says it's needed to help protect the largest growing segment of victims of internet dating, people over 65.

Previous attempts to pass the bill have failed, but Republican lawmaker is optimistic this year because New Jersey just passed similar restrictions despite opposition from internet providers.
