Power Goes Dark for Millions

TAMPA -

The power outage began in the Miami area, but blackouts rolled throughout Florida as other electric companies tried to compensate for the lack of power along the interconnected grid.

Traffic lights went dark in Sarasota County. And the power was off for a time at the University of South Florida, Eckerd College and sections of Clearwater, Brandon and Riverview.

Tampa Electric reported about 50,000 people were without power. And Progress Energy says 150,000 customers were without power throughout Central Florida.
