Gas Stations Wired, Ready
Two days into the hurricane season and the first tropical storm of the season, Arthur, already blew into Belize and Mexico over the weekend. State emergency managers are running a mock hurricane drill this week. But, that's not the only preparation.
Thanks to lessons learned from hurricanes Andrew, Charley and Wilma, the state has honed its emergency plans.
One major change was requiring large gas stations near evacuation routes to be wired for emergency power. About 1100 stations have been identified statewide.
Terry McElroy, a spokesman for the state agency that inspects gas stations, says all but about 10 stations have complied with the state mandate.
