Nelson: Scrap Electoral College

TAMPA -

Bill Nelson has introduced a series of bills that would abolish the electoral college and replace it with direct election of presidents. It would also replace the nation's haphazard sequence of primaries with six regional primaries. And early voting would be allowed in every state.

Nelson acknowledged that early primary states such as Iowa and New Hampshire would fight this bill so they wouldn't lose their influence on the election. And if the constitutional amendment is passed by Congress, it would have to then be ratified by three-quarters of all the states.
