Another College on Probation

TAMPA -

At a time when Florida A&M University celebrates being taken off probation, a bay area public college has been added to that list by the southern accreditor.

The University of South Florida at St. Petersburg has been placed on a year's probation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

The SACS Commission on Colleges put USF St. Petersburg on notice for failing to meet the accreditation standards of documenting student achievement and competency.

USF Regional Chancellor Karen White called the action disappointing,

'USF St. Petersburg is accredited and remains accredited,' she said. 'And, these are two of 89 standards that we will continue to address and I feel confident that we will demonstrate to SACS that we are in full compliance.'

Specifics won't be made public until next month.

Despite its association with USF, the St. Petersburg Campus sought and earned separate accreditation in 2006.
