Vets Celebrate Despite Fire

TAMPA -

The Veterans of the Foreign Wars Post 4321 in South Tampa celebrated Independence Day with food and friendship.

Former Army helicopter pilot, Capt. Mark Morton, sits under a tent with half a dozen other veterans. The scent of marinated pork loins comes from the grill.

The VFW post was destroyed in an October fire, so the vets have pitched their white tent on the adjacent lawn. Morton says spending time together and helping others is the best way to celebrate July 4th.

They cook out, laugh and drink beer. They will host a dinner filled with food that screams July 4th, hamburgers, hotdogs, and things from other cultures, such as yellow rice.

Post commander and former US Navy Seabee Joseph Dempsey is doing the cooking and says it's open to anyone and anybody, especially on the Fourth.
