Nuclear Plants Leap Hurdle

CRYSTAL RIVER -

The Public Service Commission's OK would allow construction of the state's first nuclear generators since the 1980's. But they still must get approval from environmental regulators and the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The plant and new transmission lines are projected to cost $17 billion. There will be a hearing in September on how much customers will be charged to pay for it.

Also, state regulators approved the construction of three solar plants by Florida Power and Light. One would be built in DeSoto County and be the world's largest solar panel generator.
