Investigation Draws Protest
![]() |
It's been nearly six weeks since a St. Petersburg Police officer shot and killed a black teenager at a graduation party. The incident is still under investigation by the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney. But that's become a point of contention for the family and some in the African American community.
On June 7th outside a party, Javon Dawson was fatally shot by a St. Petersburg law officer. Police say Dawson had a gun. Dawson's family and friends dispute that.
State attorney Bernie McCabe's office is investigating the incident.
But, a Dawson family attorney asked that McCabe be removed from the case saying his office has too close of a working relationship with the officer who killed Dawson.
An African American advocacy group, the Uhuru Movement, also called for an independent investigator during a protest outside the Pinellas County Justice Center.
McCabe's Office had no comment except to say the investigation is ongoing.
