CENTCOM Command Changes

TAMPA -

The Secretary of Defense and the head of the Joint Chiefs were in Tampa to welcome the new leader of U.S. Central Command. The joint military command at MacDill Air Force Base oversees both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

Gen. David Petraeus is well known for his leadership in the Iraq War. Now, he's in charge of all military operations in the Middle East as the new commander of U.S. Central Command.

'Teddy Roosevelt once observed that far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing. This position certainly fits that description,' Patraeus said.

He replaces CentCom's acting commander Lt. Gen. Martin Dempsey. They were classmates at US Military Academy. Among the dignitaries at the ceremony were more than 80 members of the West Point class of 1974.
