Voter Records Raise Questions

TAMPA -

Florida's reputation, when it comes to elections, is a bit battered. So, a report that voter registration material was found discarded on the side of a Tampa highway raised questions.

Before dawn Monday, hundreds of pages of paper were found strewn along I-4 near the I-275 junction. Department of Transportation workers discovered voter names, addresses and phone numbers on the documents. So, they called the Hillsborough Supervisor of Elections.

After examining the faxed material, the local supervisor determined it was campaign material, such as precinct walk lists, apparently lost by a political campaign.

Jennifer Krell Davis is communications director for the Florida Secretary of State. She says the papers did not appear to contain confidential information and didn't appear to reveal anything that wouldn't be revealed in a public record.

But, as a precaution, Davis says the DOT workers were told to destroy the nine bags of documents.
