Thousands Die from Drug Abuse

TAMPA -

Of the nearly 90,000 people who died in Florida the first half of this year, more than four thousand of those deaths were blamed on the abuse of drugs. Most of those cases involved more than one drugs. The most common prescription drugs found were tranquilizers such as Oxycodone and Vicodin - as well as anti-anxiety medications like Xanax and Valium.

State officials say the report shows that abuse of prescription drugs can lead to fatal results. The state is also seeing an increase in the number of deaths from harder drugs such as heroin. This is a continuation of trends the state has been tracking in the past couple of years.
