Talking Turkey for Less
The non-profit group Share Florida Food Network is run entirely by volunteers - 5,000 people spread throughout Florida. That low operating cost allows them to pass on the savings from buying food in bulk. That food is distributed once a month. The cost - as well as the menu - fluctuate. The 'basic package' is only $18.
At the main food storage warehouse in Ybor City, Abby Collens and several volunteers wait for late arrivals for their Thanksgiving package. Thirty dollars gets you turkey and all the trimmings.
About 12,000 of the turkey packages were distributed on Saturday. Collens says anyone can participate, and they take food stamps. There's still time to order a Christmas package, for $25, as well as the turkey package.
