Fending Off Foreclosure

TAMPA -

New unemployment numbers show 533,000 jobs were cut last month. Of course, when your paycheck disappears that increases the risk of the losing your home. A foreclosure workshop to help those homeowners is scheduled this weekend.

Just last week, Florida's governor called for a voluntary, 45 day moratorium on home foreclosures. The idea was to give families in trouble a reprieve over the holidays.

But, Congresswoman Kathy Castor says families with mortgage problems should not delay seeking help despite the moratorium.

'I urge everyone, if they feel like in trouble, they're under water, if they feel next year their job could be in jeopardy, any situation, they need to take action now,' Castor said.

Whether homeowners are trying to avoid foreclosure or want to refinance to save a little money, more than a dozen credit counselors as well as bank representatives will be available to offer free advice.

The Foreclosure workshop is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hillsborough Community College Ybor City Campus Performing Arts Hall.
