Mayor Considers Senate Run

TAMPA -

A second, major Democrat from the Miami area is running for the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by retiring Republican Mel Martinez. But, State Senator Dan Gelber and recently announced Congressman Kendrick Meek may face unexpected competition from a well-known Tampa Bay Democrat.

No decision has been made. And, there's no timetable. But, when asked whether her name should be taken out of consideration for the open US Senate seat, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio spoke up.

'You have to be up front about what you're doing and that is I am analyzing it,' Iorio said. She's discussing the race with my friends, supporters and family.

Iorio called the two Democrats already in the race 'good people' and acknowledged that others may join too.

She says shortly after Florida CFO Alex Sink declined to run, several people asked Iorio to consider the race. And, she is.

Republicans considering a run include Attorney General Bill McCollum;' former House speakers Allan Bense and Marco Rubio;' Congressmen Connie Mack and Vern Buchanan.
