Few of the speakers culled from real estate and conservative circles were ready to embrace either the stimulus package or TARP - the Troubled Assets Relief Program- or the president's new mortgage relief plan. But state government officials say there's little alternative to the federal handout.

Lieutenant Gov. Jeff Kottkamp says in the next three months, the state will receive $1.4 billion for road construction. And there will be money for people to help people needing food stamps and unemployment compensation.

Other speakers, like Daniel Mitchell of the Cato Institute, said the government created the economic mess and businesses that made unwise decisions should be allowed to wither away.
