Mayor Iorio's State of the City
Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio gave her annual "State of the City" address Monday before a packed house at the Tampa Convention Center. Her 24-minute speech revolved around the current economic crisis, promising those in attendance she'll do her best to avoid any more layoffs of city employees.
The mayor also pushed her plan for a regional light rail system that will begin in Tampa, and eventually expand to surrounding counties. She says this is the only way to battle sprawl that threatens to gobble up more land and lengthen already long commutes to work. Iorio wants Hillsborough city commissioners to place a sales tax to pay for the system on the ballot in 2010.
