The Manly Art of Reading

Jacqueline Rose is the senior coordinator for library and media services for the Polk County schools district. She says national research shows that girls consistently outpace the boys in reading. And when she checked on the local statistics, she found the same thing.

Rose had heard of a successful project in Chicago called "Real Men Read". The idea is to encourage boys to read more by giving them male role models who they can see enjoy reading.

She decided to target boys in 5th, 7th and 9th grades, and put out the word to media specialists in all the public schools. They responded enthusiastically, and now Rose says she needs a lot more men to step forward.
