Backlog of Swine Flu Cleared
The number of confirmed swine flu cases in Florida has more than doubled. However, officials say that should not alarm folks. State officials confirmed there are 31 more cases of swine flu in Florida, bringing the total number of cases in the state to 55.
But there's a reason the number has more than doubled according to Susan Smith, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of Health.
"This is a result of a cleaning up of the CDC's testing backlog of various samples from probables that had been previously submitted," Smith says. "So, these numbers were expected."
Backlogs will be less of a problem because now all four state labs have the proper materials from the Centers for Disease Control to test for H1-N1 swine flu virus.
The new confirmed cases are in 11 counties including Sarasota, Pinellas, and Hillsborough.
