Hillsborough Commissioner Rose Ferlita with Animal Services Director Bill Armstrong Hillsborough County Commissioner Rose Ferlita has images seared into her psyche of animals left behind on rooftops in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
She doesn't want to see that replicated in Tampa if the big one hits here.
During 2004, when four hurricanes plowed through the state, there were only two pet-friendly shelters in Hillsborough County. Two more shelters have been added. But Ferlita says they need more help.
Hillsborough County Animal Services is trying to get the county's school system to add to the number of shelters. They're also putting out a plea for volunteers to help care for the animals, as well as donations to buy crates and cages which would go in the shelters.
